Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Meiän piti kirjottaa personal statement essay Englishissä (antakaa anteeks, mut jos sanon sen suomeks, nii se kuulostaa nii väärält), ja ajattelin, et julkaisen mun kirjotelman tänne. Tää aihe(?) oli "Pick an experience from your own life and explain how it has influenced your development" ja kirjotin siis vaihdosta. Oon tosi ylpee tästä esseestä, koska mun pisteet oli 40/40 eli A ja ekan palautuspäivän jälkeen opettaja sano, et jokaikisestä esseestä oli tullu F, joten pelkäsin aika paljon, et minkälainen arvosana mulle sitten tulee, kun jenkeillekkin tulee F. Ei tää kyllä ihan täysien pisteiden arvonen mun mielestä ollu haha. Kuitenkin ajattelin, että tätä kautta voi päästä vähän mun pään sisälle haha ja kans vähän näkemään minkälaiset englannin kielen taidot mulla on. (Ps. Saatoin vähän dramatisoida joitain kohtia (esim. mä en oo hirveen small-town girl), et kuulostais vähän paremmalta haha) Kuvituksena viimeset kuvat Suomesta ihanien kanssa.

I’m standing in Helsinki-Vantaa airport at 6am. My closest friends are crying, and I can see that my mother’s holding back her tears. I’m feeling tired after two hours of sleep last night, but other than that, I feel nothing. I’m not excited, sad, or scared. For me, usually a very emotional girl, it is weird, especially knowing that in just a few moments I’ll be leaving everything and everyone behind for a year and jumping into the biggest adventure of my life: exchange year.

For me, a small-town girl who lived her whole life in the same apartment building, leaving home for a year is a huge thing. It took courage and will to make the decision, but for some reason, it was always pretty obvious for me that I would leave. For a few years, I knew I would move to the US, but I didn’t know where. The countless nights I spent online, searching for the dream location didn’t matter anymore when I found out that I was moving to California. It was a huge step towards my dream.
I remember my last couple of days in Finland, in my beautiful hometown of Espoo, better than anything else. I remember walking miles in the middle of the night just to get some ice cream, singing in the bus stop, and the little rain from the cloudy sky. Knowing that I’ll leave my home soon made me see everything differently. The same view I see from my room’s window every night was now the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. The same apartment buildings, streets, and trees looked like something I’ve never seen before. The tears my friends cried with me and the plans we made for the next summer made everything seem so real.
I’ve been living abroad under two months now and it has already changed me a lot. Seeing different people and their lifestyles has made me even more approving of other cultures. After living in an American family, I’ve had to change my perspective. I’ve had to let go of my routines, my way of life and adapt to a totally new environment and family structure. It has been hard and tiring, but I’ve learned that it is also worth it.
Not having my mom, who has always had my back, or my friends, who I hang out with, in the US with me has forced me to get new friends and adjust to a new family. I had to face the world alone, and it made me grow as a person. I’ve become a lot more independent. I’ve also realized how strong I am which has made me feel a lot better about myself and that way I’ve gained more self-confidence. Many have asked me why I wanted to leave everything I have for a year. It’s hard to explain for someone who doesn’t have the same passion for traveling as me so usually I just answer with a question: I have the chance, why wouldn’t I?
I’ve heard people say that being away from home makes you appreciate where you come from, and it is true. I’m proud to say that I’m from Finland: the country where Santa Claus lives and where Angry Birds was invented. But for me, appreciation wasn’t the only thing I’ve gained. I’ve learned that I’m a traveler. I belong somewhere else. In Finland, I feel like I’m different that everyone else. While most Finns are very unsocial and depressed, I’ve always been very positive. Living in the US had made me even more positive person. I’m able to see so much more good in the little things and appreciate everything I have a lot more than I did before. My love for my country will never die, even though it’s not the place where I feel I’m supposed to be.
That morning at the airport, the last look at my family and my closest friends is surprisingly easy. I see their teary eyes, but a line from a song comes to my mind: “Sometimes goodbye is a second chance”. That’s what my goodbyes are all about. They’re a chance for me to live my dreams. When the plane leaves the ground, I feel amazing. My dream has just begun.

Sun vaihtariblogia on ihana seurata. ❤

Muutenki sun blogia on tosi kiva lukea! :) Itsekkin haluaisin lähteä vaihtoon mutta rahatilanne ei anna periksi, enkä varmaankaan pärjäisikään mun kielitaidolla missään :/

  8. Jotenkin häiritsi tuo aikamuodon vaihtuminen viimeisessä kappaleessa. "That morning at the airport, the last look at my family and my closest friends is surprisingly easy" esimerkiksi tosi häiritsevä lause. Mutta muuten ihana ja tosi samaistuttava teksti :)
